GEORGIA VEHICLE TITLE TAX
Georgia TAVT: 7% of the state's vehicle value.
Most vehicles titled in Georgia are subject to a one-time title ad valorem tax instead of ordinary sales tax. Georgia lists the current TAVT rate as 7%.
Georgia TAVT formula
(Georgia fair-market value − eligible dealer trade-in) × 7%
The official calculation uses Georgia's fair-market value, which may not equal the negotiated purchase price. For a new vehicle, Georgia generally uses the greater of the retail selling price or the state assessment-manual value, with qualifying reductions. Used vehicles generally use the value in the state assessment manual.
$40,000 Georgia example
If Georgia's taxable fair-market value is $40,000, a 7% planning estimate is $2,800. If a dealer accepts a $10,000 qualifying trade-in and the taxable value becomes $30,000, the estimate is $2,100. The county tag office's value controls the actual bill.
Trade-ins and dealer fees
Georgia says a dealer trade-in reduces the value used for TAVT, while a private-party transaction does not receive that trade reduction. For a new vehicle, delivery, freight, documentation fees, and similar charges are included in the retail selling price before permitted reductions.
