NEW YORK VEHICLE TAX
New York car sales tax: 4% state rate plus local tax.
New York's combined rate starts with the 4% state rate and adds the rate for the applicable local jurisdiction. An eligible trade-in accepted for resale generally reduces the taxable receipt.
New York tax formula
(Vehicle selling price − eligible trade-in allowance + taxable charges) × combined state and local rate
$40,000 New York example
At an example combined rate of 8%, a $40,000 vehicle produces $3,200 in tax. With a $10,000 eligible trade-in, the estimated taxable price falls to $30,000 and tax falls to $2,400—a difference of $800.
Why the local rate matters
Combined rates vary by jurisdiction, and an additional Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District rate can apply in covered locations. Use the current official rate table rather than assuming the rate from a nearby county.
What to verify
- The combined rate matches the controlling jurisdiction.
- The dealer intends to resell the accepted trade-in and subtracts the allowance.
- The sales-tax receipt and registration paperwork agree with the buyer's order.
