TEXAS VEHICLE TAX
Texas car sales tax: 6.25% after an eligible trade-in.
Texas motor vehicle sales tax is 6.25% of the sales price minus an eligible motor-vehicle trade-in allowance. Private-party used-car purchases can use a standard presumptive value.
Texas tax formula
(Vehicle selling price − eligible trade-in allowance) × 6.25%
$40,000 Texas example
With no trade, estimated tax is $2,500. With a $10,000 eligible trade-in in the same transaction, the estimated taxable value is $30,000 and tax is $1,875—a $625 difference.
Private-party purchases are different
Texas may calculate tax on the purchase price or the state's standard presumptive value for a used vehicle bought from someone other than a licensed dealer. Check the value before treating a low written price as the taxable amount.
What to verify
- The trade is a qualifying motor vehicle transferred in the same transaction.
- The tax line equals 6.25% of the documented taxable value.
- Title, registration, inspection, and dealer charges are itemized separately.
