CALIFORNIA VEHICLE TAX

California car sales tax: start at 7.25%, then check the address.

California applies a 7.25% statewide sales and use tax rate, with district taxes raising the rate in many locations. A vehicle trade-in generally does not reduce the taxable selling price.

California tax formula

Estimated tax

(Vehicle selling price + taxable dealer charges) × combined state and district rate

The exact combined rate depends on the location that controls the transaction. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration provides an address lookup because city and county district taxes vary.

$40,000 California example

At the 7.25% statewide base rate, a $40,000 vehicle produces an estimated $2,900 tax before taxable dealer charges. A $10,000 trade-in does not lower that estimate under California's general trade-in rule. If a district rate applies, the total is higher.

What to verify on the buyer's order

  • The combined rate matches the applicable registration or delivery address.
  • Dealer-installed products and documentation charges are identified separately.
  • Government title and registration fees are not confused with tax.
  • The trade allowance and payoff appear as separate lines.

Check the current official rate

Use the CDTFA address rate lookup for the specific location. The agency also publishes the statewide and district-rate explanation.
