How to calculate car sales tax

Common dealer-purchase estimate

(Vehicle selling price − eligible trade-in allowance + taxable dealer charges) × applicable tax rate. Florida county surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of the taxable amount.

Car sales tax is not always calculated from the sticker price. The taxable amount can change after a dealer discount, an eligible trade-in allowance, and taxable documentation or add-on charges. Title and registration fees are usually shown separately from sales tax.

Rules for a used car can differ when the seller is a private party. Some states use a minimum tax, vehicle value, age schedule, excise tax, highway-use tax, or title tax instead of the same percentage used for a dealer sale. Use the detailed state guides below and verify the final line on the buyer's order.

How much is sales tax on a car?

For a simple percentage-based estimate, multiply the taxable purchase amount by the applicable vehicle tax rate. A $30,000 taxable amount at a hypothetical 6% rate produces $1,800 in tax. The table illustrates the arithmetic; these are not state-specific quotes.

Illustrative tax on a $30,000 taxable amount
Example rateEstimated tax
5%$1,500
6%$1,800
7%$2,100
8%$2,400

Trade-in allowance and loan payoff are different

Suppose a $30,000 car has a $10,000 qualifying trade-in allowance. Under a hypothetical rule allowing the full allowance, the taxable amount is $20,000 before taxable fees. At 6%, tax is $1,200, a $600 tax saving. If you still owe $7,000 on that trade-in, your trade equity is only $3,000. That payoff affects the amount you need to pay or finance; it is not the same as the trade-in tax deduction.

With no other fees, the out-the-door purchase price in this example is $31,200. Subtracting $3,000 of net trade equity leaves $28,200 before cash down. Use the full out-the-door and financing calculator to keep these amounts separate.

Why your dealer's tax number might differ

Check whether the dealer used a different taxable price, treated a rebate or fee differently, applied a local tax, or used a separate state valuation. The state guides explain the supported presets and link to official sources. A private-party sale, lease, or exempt purchase may need a different calculation.

Next: estimate the monthly car payment, inspect the cost of dealer fees, or compare extra payments on an existing auto loan.

How to use this estimate

1. Match the registration location

Use the state and local rate tied to where the vehicle will be titled, not merely the dealer's address.

2. Check the trade rule

An eligible dealer trade-in may reduce the taxable amount. A separate private sale is generally different.

3. Reconcile the buyer's order

Ask the dealer to identify every taxable charge and compare the written tax line with this estimate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate car sales tax?

Start with the vehicle selling price, subtract an eligible trade-in allowance when state rules permit it, add taxable dealer charges, and multiply by the applicable state and local vehicle tax rate.

Do I pay sales tax on a used car?

Most states tax used-vehicle purchases, but dealer purchases, private-party sales, exemptions, minimum taxes, and value-based schedules can follow different rules.

Is car sales tax based on where I buy or register the car?

The applicable rules commonly depend on where the vehicle will be titled or registered, but interstate purchases and credits can change the result. Confirm the final rate with the state agency or dealer paperwork.

Does a trade-in reduce car sales tax?

Many states allow an eligible dealer trade-in to reduce the taxable vehicle price, while some do not. A private sale usually does not receive the same treatment.

Are dealer fees taxable?

Tax treatment varies by state and by fee. Enter only charges that the dealer treats as taxable, then check the buyer's order.

Rates and rules are educational estimates reviewed September 3, 2026. Local tax, vehicle type, residency, exemptions, rebates, leases, and private-party purchases can change the result. Verify with the linked state authority or a qualified professional.
